Background

Overview of Agreement

Originally signed by 30 companies in September 2005, the Voluntary Agreement by Industries on Green Purchases has since expanded to include a total of 117 companies and an even wider scope of green product purchases. The role of industries is critical for achieving “green growth” and for spreading the culture of green production and consumption in Korea. The agreement also promotes the corporate social responsibility (CSR) plan of each respective company. Furthermore, with global paradigms shifting toward sustainable development, and the strengthening of environmental regulations for exports (especially to the EU), we are now living in a world that urgently demands the growth of the eco-friendly product market to actively respond to changes in eco-friendly product policies.

Companies play a key role in the technological development, production, and distribution of eco-friendly products. By purchasing eco-friendly products as healthy corporate consumers, companies are not only green producers but also stewards of the environment that help spread a sustainable consumption culture. Recognizing the important role of corporations, the Ministry of Environment has signed a voluntary agreement to construct an Eco-Products Chain that encompasses the production, distribution, and consumption of products throughout society and promotes the purchase of eco-friendly products by companies.
